Ás, a substantial farm, the main one of a group of farms known together as Áshverfi. The birthplace of Gísli Bjarnason (1678–1707), who died at sea from smallpox, the disease then being brought to Iceland with his belongings. It became the worst epidemic since the Plague, killing 12,000 in the diocese of Skálholt and 6,000 in the north.
