Bæjarstaðarskógur, birchwoods about 5km from Skafta­­­fell, with straight–trunked trees up to 12m in height. Birch trees from Bæjarstaðarskógur stock are considered the best in Iceland. The 22 hectare wood has been protected since 1935, in the care of the Forestry Service. Geothermal heat. Glacier Guides, based in Skaftafell, offer guided tours in the woods.
