Baulárvallavatn

Baulárvallavatn, a good fishing lake notorious for its monsters, as many as 5 having supposedly been seen at once, sunning themselves on the shore and returning to the water at dusk. There was formerly a farm, Baulárvellir, near the lake. One midwinter day in the 19th century the farmer went off, leaving his wife alone with the children. She heard a loud noise as if the farm were being pulled down, and an icy blast filled the room, but she dared not move. The next day several outbuildings were found to have been destroyed, and the huge tracks of an unknown creature could be traced to a hole in the ice on the lake. Just north of there are the lakes Hraunsfjarðarvatn and Selvallavatn.
