Breiðamerkursandur

Breiðamerkursandur, extensive sand area created by glaciers and glacial rivers. The principal breeding grounds of the Great Skua in Iceland. There used to be several farms in the western section of the sands, but they were destroyed by advancing glaciers in the 17th century. One of the farms was Breiðá, home of Kári Sölmundarson of Njáls saga.
