Dimmifjallgarður

Dimmifjallgarður, (“Dark mountain range”) going south from Haugsöræfi to Þjóðfell, most of its peaks being 600–900 m high. Formerly there was a route across there between the Hólsfjöll farms and Vopnafjörður, but it was difficult in winter and there were frequent accidents. In February 1874 two men were lost in a snow storm with their horse and cart. Their bodies were found 2 weeks later. The horse stood by them, alive but unable to move because its reins were frozen to the ground.
