Egilsstaðabær

Egilsstaðir, located in the heart of East-Iceland in the broad valley of Fljótsdalshérað. This core is the communication- and service center of East Iceland. The Museum Center reflect the history of the area. An important attraction is the glacially hollowed Lake Lögurinn, which empties into the wide bay Héraðsflói through Lagarfljót River. Through the area flows the Lagarfljót lake which is home to Iceland’s most renowned water monster, Lagarfljótsormur (The Lagarfljóts wyrm), considered to be the sister of the Loch Ness monster.

A domestic airport and substitute airport for international flight is located in Egilsstaðir with only one hour’s flight from Reykjavík and a mere two hours flight from Europe.
