Engelskagjá

Fontur or Langanesfontur, the outermost point of the Langanes peninsula, with high, sheer cliffs. Many ships had been wrecked nearby, the first lighthouse erected in 1910. Near the lighthouse is a rift in the cliffs, Engelskagjá (“The English gorge”), where shipwrecked English sailors are said to have managed to climb up. However, all but the captain died of exposure on way to the nearest farm. A cross marks the spot.
