Fóelluvötn

Sandskeið, a fairly large sandy plateau, the bed of an old lake, now partly cultivated. Airstrip and headquarters of the Icelandic Gliding Association. On a low, rocky hill to the west of Sandskeið are the remains of an old mountain hut. The road used to lie over Sandskeið, south of the airstrip. It has now been moved north across the Fóelluvötn area, where considerable lakes are formed in the spring melts. They empty down over the Fossvellir plains into the river Hólmsá. In Fossvallaklif pass there is a stone marked 1887 showing when the first road for vehicles was laid.
