Garðar

Garðar, former parsonage, church and manor farm. Now part of Akranes. The Akranes Museum Centre in Gardar comprises the unique Iceland´s Mineral Kingdom, the highly interesting Iceland´s Museum of Sports, the informative Exhibition of the National Land Survey of Iceland, and the Akranes Folk Museum with innumerable items of very great interest. The Centre has been much acclaimed by both Icelanders and foreign visitors since it was opened to the public recently. The local folk museum is housed in the former parsonage which was built in 1871, of concrete blocks and cement, the first house in Iceland built by this method. Sigurfari, a typical fishing vessel from around the turn of last century, and the only such cutter left in Iceland, is on display there.
