Nyrðri–Ófæra and Syðri–Ófæra, (“Northern and southern impassable”) two rivers that flow through the Eldgjá canyon and join the Skaftá river. The northern river enters the rift in two impressive waterfalls, Ófærufoss. A natural bridge across the lower falls collapsed in 1994. The southern river also plunges in a waterfall into the narrow canyon Hánípugil, just before it comes down to Hánípufit. a green spot on the west banks of the Skaftá river.
