Hólsfjöll, a small and isolated district east of Jökulsá á Fjöllum, 300–400 m above sea level and the highest inhabited district in Iceland.
Sandy in places and subject to erosion, yet having good grasslands and pastures for sheep.
The smoked lamb (hangikjöt) from Hólsfjöll is renowned.
Low tuff mountains on the east side, the highest points being Grímsstaðakerling (859 m) and Hólskerling (801 m).
Formerly there were eight farms in the district but now there are only two left, Grímsstaðir and Nýhóll.
