Hraun, a farm in the hills on the west side of the river, birthplace of Jónas Hallgrímsson (1807–45), naturalist and one of the most important Romantic poets in Iceland. Hraunsvatn, a good trout–fishing lake 50–60 m deep, is in the valley behind the hills. Hallgrímur, father of Jónas, drowned in it.
