Hveragerði

Hveragerði, a small town that has been built up since 1930.One of the biggest assets of the town is the Geothermal park in the centre of the town. Such a natural wonder in the middle of a residential area is extremely rare in the world.

The Hveragerði surroundings are a paradise for outdoors people. There are good hiking trails within the town that link up with a network of trails on the land belonging to the Agricultural University of Iceland at the foot of Reykjafjall Mountain and in Ölfusborgir.

After an earthquake struck southern Iceland on May 29th, 2008 a new hot springs area appeared directly above the town. The area demonstrates how the forces of nature shape the land, as the hot springs are quite diverse and constantly changing. The earthquake measured 6.3 on the Richter scale.
