Jörfi, a farm below the peak Jörfahnúkur (714 m). Notorious festivities (Jörfagleði) were held there at one time, but the debauchery is said to have been so great that they were abolished early in the 18th century and have never been revived. It is said that 19 illegitimate children were conceived at the last Jörfagleði, which was the last straw for the authorities. A folktale states that one winter a traveller asked for lodging at Jörfi for himself and his horses, but was refused. This enraged the visitor who said the local farmer would lose some of his own horses. At about the same time the following year the farmer’s horses became terrified without a reason, rushed up the nearby peak and fell to their deaths on the slippery ice slopes.
