Kálfafellsdalur

Suðursveit, the district between the river Kolgríma and the Breiðamerkursandur sands, mostly narrow flatlands between the mountains and the sea. Very impressive mountains in the background, giving good shelter from the glacier and destructive rivers. Lagoons and sand–reefs along the sea. The three big valleys Staðardalur, Kálfafellsdalur and Steinadalur cut into the mountains. The bottom of Kálfafellsdalur is very steep with a glacier–tongue, Brókarjökull (“Breeches glacier”), dividing around the rock Brók, and hence the name. The area provides some of the most majestic mountaineering country in Iceland.
