Among pastors there was Ólafur Indriðason (1796–1861), father of the poets Páll (1827–1905) and Jón (1850–1916) Ólafsson.
Both brothers wrote many poems about the Kolfreyjustaður area.
Just east of Kolfreyjustaður is a small peninsula called Hvalnes. There the French vessel Manon stranded in 1924. All the sailors were saved and the flotsam was auctioned away. A part of the old warehouse at Hafnargata 21 was built from Manon´s boards.
