Miklibær

Miklibær, a farm, church and parsonage, often mentioned in the Sagas and the stage for various dramas through the ages.

In 1786, for instance, Rev. Oddur Gíslason (1740–1786) disappeared when travelling from one farm to another and was never seen again. The female ghost Solveig was blamed. She had been a maid in his household, fallen in love with him, been rejected, gone mad and finally cut her own throat, after which she haunted Oddur wherever he went, especially in the dark.

Solveig’s remains were found in the churchyard wall in 1937 and given a Christian burial at Glaumbær.

The grave of the poet Bólu–Hjálmar is at Miklibær, marked with a stone monument.
