Nýidalur, (“New valley”) or Jökuldalur, (“Glacier valley”) a valley on the southern side of Tungnafellsjökull. Its floor is about 800 m above sea level, yet surprisingly rich in vegetation. Probably the highest area of such vegetation in Iceland. This valley was off the beaten track and was found by three farmers from the north in 1845. Two tourist huts by the west entrance to the valley. The lodges in Nýidalur are just by the highland route over Sprengisandur. A warden is appointed during the summer. From the houses you can view the sout–west side of the glacier Tungnafellsjökull. The glacier can easily be accessed by foot about Mjóháls east of Vonarskarð.
