Patreksfjörður

Patreksfjörður, (pop. 651), a town on a fjord of same name, built on the two sandspits Vatneyri and Geirseyri. A very old trading place. The harbour, dug in shallow water on Vatneyri in 1946, is called Patrekshöfn. Main industries fishing and fish–processing. A snow avalanche in 1983 killed 4 people and destroyed many homes. There is a memorial to that event. There is also a memorial honouring British seamen in Icelandic waters and those who died there. This memorial was a joint venture by the citizens of Aberdeen, Hull and Grimsby in the United Kingdom.
