Sandgerði, a town where there is much fishing and fish processing, rapid growth in the last 20–30 years, good harbour, sport center with swimming pool.
The Nature Centre is an environmental travel and learning centre based on the local Icelandic reality. It relates to the sea, the shore, the fish, the birds and the fresh–water ecology in the immediate environment. There you can also find the unique Suðurnes Science and Learning Center, a research center that offers high quality research facilities and accommodation for researchers.
There are two exhibitions in the Center: a natural history museum and the magnificent exhibition Attraction of the Poleson the work, life and death of the French medical doctor and polar scientist Jean–Baptiste Charcot. His research ship, Pourquoi–Pas?, was perished by the coast of Iceland in 1936.
