Smjörvatnsheiði

Smjörvatnsheiði, (“Butter lake moor”) an old mountain route between Jökulsárhlíð and Vopnafjörður, with a refuge hut about mid–way. Now a jeep–track from Hofteigur in Jökuldalur. According to Vopnfirðinga saga the criminal Svartur was outlawed to these moors. He was particularly evil in that he stole and killed more sheep than he needed. Brodd–Helgi, a boy of 12 at the time, is said to have slain him in a hard battle, thus winning renown.
