Sprengisandur, a wide and extensive desert in the centre of Iceland with indistinct boundaries, but usually understood to be between Eyvindarver/Háumýrar/Þjórsárver and Kiðagil and between the glaciers Hofsjökull and Tungnafellsjökull and the river Skjálfandafljót. Mostly about 700–800 m above sea level and about 30 by 70 km in area. In times past this route was not very much used, mostly because of the distance between grasslands. Since the road was made it has been used a good deal by motor vehicles in summertime.
