Svartifoss

Fell, an ancient manor farm and church until 1909. Nearby is the waterfall Svartifoss, behind which is a cave where the outlaw Fjalla–Eyvindur (“Mountain–Eyvindur”) is said to have stayed and which is a good landmark for ships. One of best–known farmers was sheriff Halldór Jakobsson (1736–1810). Among his writings is the history of volcanoes, published in Danish in 1757 and for long a popular reference book abroad. Fell was also the home for a time of the Rev. Oddur Þorsteinsson (ca. 1600), who is said to have been a powerful sorcerer and about whom there are many folk tales.
