Þjófadalir

Þjófadalir, (“Thieves’ valleys”) some valleys east of the Langjökull glacier. The story, almost certainly apocryphal, is that 9 students from Hólar hid out there and lived off stolen sheep after having killed a serving woman at Hólar. The area can be reached by jeep–track from Hveravellir. A tourist hut built 1939. You can take several short but joyful hikes from the lodge, e.g. Hrufafell, Fagrahlíð and Jökulkrók by the edge of the glacier Langjökull.
