Tungudalur, a valley close to the town of Ísafjörður, large areas of birchwood. Many inhabitants of Ísafjörður had summer cottages there but in April 1994 an avalanche destroyed about 40 cottages, sweeping away large tracts of birchwood and costing one man his life. Higher up is the popular skiing area in Seljalandsdalur, along with skilodges. The 1994 avalanche destroyed ski-lifts and other constructions but these have been rebuilt and additional ski-facilities put up in Tungudalur itself. A nine hole golf course is in Tungudalur.
