The northwest is mostly a rural area with extensive moors and lowlands with a great number of fishing rivers and lakes with salmon and trout. The northwest is a good destination for outdoor activities like fishing, rafting, riding, hiking and skiing.
Along the coast line you will find small picturesque fishing villages Siglufjörður once an important herring centre, Hofsós which is one of the oldest trading places in Iceland and Sauðárkrókur from where you can take a boat trip to the island Drangey.
There are a number of historical sites and interesting museums in the northwest and a rich wildlife. However if you really want to take a good look at this area you will have to stay of Road Nr. 1 and take the roads that lead to the beautiful coast line.
