Haukadalur

Haukadalur, a short valley. Site of the first fish–freezing plant in the district, later moved to Þingeyri. Grave of French seamen. Site of the main action in Gísla saga Súrssonar, one of Iceland´s most famous outlaws. It was off Haukadalur that sheriff Hannes Hafstein was almost drowned in 1899, when British trawlermen he was trying to arrest for fishing in Icelandic waters overturned his boat. Three of his men drowned.
