Hólasandur, a sand desert between the Laxárdalur valley and the Lake Mývatn district, formerly a much–travelled route. A major effort is underway there to reclaim the land. The Kísilvegur road was built across Hólasandur in 1967. Extensive revegetation work done on behalf of local conservation group Húsgull and the Soil Conservation.
