Laugafell

Laugafell, (892 m) and Laugafellshnjúkur (987 m) mountain peaks northeast of Hofsjökull. Both are visible from far and wide. Between them is the river Hnjúkskvísl, and to the north the river Laugakvísl. On a ridge leading northwest from Laugafell there are warm springs 40–50°C, from which flows a warm stream. Various kinds of grass flourish at nearby Valllendisbrekkur and around the springs although the altitude is over 700 m. In 1948 the Akureyri Tourist Association built a tourist hut there. Nearby is a rock with a small trough, probably man–made, containing lukewarm water. The story goes that Þórunn from Grund (see Road 821) brought her people to stay there in the 15th century during the Black Death, and made the pool.
