Melanes, the easternmost farm in the Rauðisandur district. Some old soil layers perhaps indicating former grain–growing. Just east of there is the abandoned farm Sjöundá, scene of a crime early in the 19th century, on which writer Gunnar Gunnarsson’s novel Svartfugl is based. Bjarni Bjarnason and Steinunn Sveinsdóttir were found guilty of murdering their spouses, and condemned to death.
