Stóra-Giljá

Stóra–Giljá, a farm where Þorvaldur Koðránsson víðförli (“widely travelled”) lived. He was a Christian missionary in Iceland who travelled around with the bishop Friðrekur, from Sachen. Þorvaldur later founded a monastery in Constantinople (Mikligarður, in Icelandic) and died there. There is a memorial to these missionaries at the nearby stone Gullsteinn, (“Golden stone”) which was revered by the heathens. When Friðrekur chanted to exorcise it, the stone split.
