Laxárvirkjun, a hydro–electric station, near Brúar at the foot of Laxárgljúfur gorge, first built in 1939 but extended twice since. The gorge is deep and in places wild, with the waterfalls Brúarfossar (sometimes called Laxárfossar) at the lower end.
