Öræfi

Öræfi, the westernmost district of Austur–Skaftafellssýsla between the sands Skeiðarársandur and Breiðamerkursandur, a semi–circle around the base of Öræfajökull. For long one of the most isolated districts of Iceland with no harbours on the coast, Vatnajökull to the north and dangerous rivers to east and west. Until 1962 mice, rats and cats were unknown in the district. Magnificent views and great variety in landscape and nature. Only seven farms or groups of farms along the 43 km road between the farms Skaftafell and Kvísker.
