Reyðarfjörður

Reyðarfjörður, a town founded at the turn of last century because of herring fishing. After a road was built through the Fagridalur valley in 1909 the village grew larger. Trading, administration and industry.

A World War II Museum was opened in 1995 because there was an important military base located east of town. In January 1942 a platoon of British soldiers on winter exercises were caught in a very bad blizzard on the mountain above Eskifjörður. The family at Veturhús farm rescued and housed 48 of them but unfortunately another nine perished.
