Sölvadalur

Sölvadalur, a valley going southeast from Möðruvellir, ca. 25 km long. Formerly it had 9 farms but there are now only 3. The valley has often been hard hit by landslides and avalanches, most recently in June, 1995 when there was a landslide in Hólsfjall, 1 km long and half a km wide. It hurtled over the river Núpsá, filling its 50 m deep gorge and continuing onto the other bank. Its path lay from 50 to 150 m away from the farm buildings at Þormóðsstaðir. The climb onto Hólafjall starts at Þormóðsstaðir.
