Ísafjörður, the biggest settlement in the Western Fjords and their only market town, municipal charter since 28th January 1866.
In the oldest part of town, Neðstikaupstaður, there are four of the oldest houses in Iceland, one of which houses the maritime museum. They were built in the mid-18th century.
For the tourist, Ísafjörður has a range of services for all budgets and tastes. An array of day tours, both in the wilderness and closer to civilisation, are available, for hikers, paddlers and other outdoorsy types of course, but also for those wanting a leisurely walk in a bird colony or at a museum.
